Opportunities with KLHS and the SS Moyie

KLHS plans for a busy and exciting season in 2022 on both the SS Moyie and in the Visitors Centre.

We are officially beginning our rehabilitation project on the SS Moyie and the National Historic Site Grounds

We are excited to reopen the Visitor Centre in Summer 2022 – typically Mother’s Day weekend!

The Kootenay Lake Historical Society is currently looking to fill a number of positions at the SS Moyie this includes 6 Summer Student Positions, 2 Managerial roles, and hire an Executive Director for our busy society.

Executive Director

Highlights of Qualifications Required:

  • Well developed organizational skills and leadership
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
  • Knowledge & competence of digital workspaces (including Social Media Platforms, CMS, and Marketing Software)
  • Experience of Policy and Procedure for Non-profit Organizations including an understanding of working in a regulated environment
  • Familiarity with Non-profit Strategic Planning 
  • Financial acumen, knowledge of budgets and spreadsheets
  • Ability to submit grant applications
  • Required to attend board meetings and take minutes

Visitor Centre Manager

Highlights of Qualifications Required:
  • Strong managerial experience
  • Team player and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of local history and knowledge of the area and amenities 
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal
  • Ability to work with/for an Executive Director and a dedicated board director
  • Available full-time (seasonal)
  • Competent with digital payment gateway (Square), and other digital work systems – such as email, spreadsheets, social media, etc.
  • Enjoys working in a public setting
  • Familiarity with Destination BC is a definite asset
  • Ability to understand the importance of the local First Nations and the role they play in our history

Site Supervisor/Interpreter

Highlights of Qualifications Required:
  • Team player and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of local history and local physical geography
  • Knowledge of the area and amenities
  • Enjoys working with the public
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal
  • Assist in the research and development of potential educational displays based on the Society’s existing archival material and upcoming funding opportunities
  • Available full-time (seasonal)
  • Competent with digital payment gateway (Square), and other digital work systems – such as email, spreadsheets, social media, etc.
  • Willingness to learn
  • Interpretation of what is happening on the ship

Site Assistant  – Summer Student 

Highlights of Qualifications Required:
  • Ability to work safely and efficiently in a construction environment
  • Ability to follow instructions and a keen eye for detail
  • Desire to work with a team and independently 
  • Ability to perform physical labour at times
  • Communication skills & understanding of required tasks are necessary
  • Willingness to learn new skills, responsibilities and history of our area
  • Punctual, reliable, and flexible
  • Enthusiastic and friendly while in a public setting 

Site Ambassador  – Summer Student

Highlights of Qualifications Required:
  • Excellent customer service skills 
  • Provide tourism information to individuals, families, and various groups
  • Willingness to learn of the history of the SS Moyie and the area 
  • Provide guided tours and assist with -guided tours on the SS Moyie, as required
  • Daily opening and closing routines of a National Historic Site
  • Experience with or willingness to quickly learn point of sale operations
  • Perform regular maintenance, cleaning and sanitizing as required
  • Attention to detail required  for recording statistics, tracking sales, and general administrative duties
